For those of you who may not know, we may of decided to get a 9 week old puppy when Grayson was 10 weeks old…!
His name is Joey and he is now 11 weeks old.
Ive always wanted a puppy again after i lost my other 2 dogs, i missed having a dog, the companionship and the love they give, i also always wanted my children to grow up with a puppy because they would be like best friends. So i was looking through gumtree and Pets4Homes and i seen this guy had an advert on for 2 black Labs/Collies and they were literally only 2 minuted down the road from us. So i showed John and asked if we could just go see them! We genuinely had ZERO intention of buying one in the middle of January after having Christmas and also 10 weeks after having a baby! I messaged the guy and he invited us down to have a look at the male pup. Well im pretty sure we both fell in love, not that either of us would actually admit it! We said we would think about it and let the guy know within 24 hours and asked if we could get first refusal incase anyone else tried to jump on him within that 24 hour period.
So we are sat at home after putting Grayson to bed weighing up all the pros & cons of having such a small child and a brand new puppy! For us the pros ought weighted the cons massively! And after telling family & friends about our new arrival safe to say they all though we were mad! “Are you crazy”, “A puppy & a baby…you’re brave”, “stupid idea” i didnt understand why they thought it would be such a bad idea. I mean Grayson is very content, he sleeps through the night, hes such a good baby! Until the day we picked Joey up i was petrified! I began doubting my capabilities as a mum. Would i cope? Would i manage a baby & a puppy on my own while John was at work…
The day we brought him home i just knew he was going to be a dream puppy! Grayson didnt have a clue what was going on! All of a sudden there was this big black thing constantly at his side giving his little hand a lick or a nudge and resting his head on his belly. For a pup who had never seen a baby before and didnt know how to react, he reacted amazingly! I have never seen anything like it!
After a few rocky days settling in, crying in his cage at night and a few pee accidents on the floor, i managed to train him to pee outside and to let me know when he needs the toilet and also not to cry at night! That really only took a few days, and safe to say im well bloody chuffed with myself!! I single handedly managed to look after a baby, give attention and training to a puppy and get it to stop having accidents inside!
Joey has never left Graysons side since the second they have been introduced. Grayson cried, Joey is right there with his head on his belly as if to reassure him its ok. He even runs through to the kitchen to me and tells me! When Grayson is having some playtime on his mat on the floor, joey is right beside him (not on the mat obv) But her is there keeping an eye on him. When Grayson needs a nappy change again Joey is right at his side, even when Grayson is throwing his arms about and kicking his legs, Joey will literally lie there and let him do it!
I obviously have NEVER and will never leave both dog and baby alone in a room together, if i need to get up and go out the room i make sure the dog follows. If he hears Grayson cry, that is the only time he will leave my side and rush to him, and im not far behind him! At the moment, until we can trust the dog not to pee everywhere and chew everything he sleeps in his own room downstairs with heated flooring in a cage. He goes in here when we go out to our baby classes and also at night. When he is a bit older we will give him more of a run of the house but he needs to prove he wont pee or chew stuff before that happens and i think we are a few months off that yet, hes still a young pup!
Now dont get me wrong he still needs some training in not jumping up on people and to get out the puppy chewing/biting phase, both of which he has never done to Grayson! Hes so gentle with him! But overall i think i was worried for nothing…I know it all depends on the dog and the breed and how you raise it ect, and im sure there will be a time where Joey doesnt want Graysons attention or him sitting on him and he will go away to his bed for peace, but i cant see him being aggressive on purpose. But hes slotted right in to our little family and i dont know what we would have done if he didnt come in to our lives when he did!
